Words of Wisdom Wednesdays: New Postage Rates for 2012!

On Sunday The USPS rolled out new postage rates for 2012.  As you and your loved ones prepare to send out your event stationary, whether it is your save the dates, shower invitations, wedding invitations, thank yous and more it's important to know how these increases will affect you.

If you're working with an invitation designer they often times are in the know.  If you're not, the old fashioned way of visiting your local USPS with a sample of your stationary is always effective.  The USPS website does have a helpful postage calculator as well, it can assist you in getting an idea of what your looking at rate wise.  However, I do feel that sometimes in person is the safest bet when it comes to something so important as an invitation.

In researching for this post I found an amazing cheat sheet created by the awesome Erika of Delphine Press.  Check it out!

All this stamp talk also makes me feel like sharing some of my favorite stamp designs for wedding invitations.  If you don't want to spend the cost associated with using Zazzle to customize your look, here are the best of the best when it comes to wedding and/love themed stamps.

The cake is of course a very common selection and often paired with the rings.  I however adore the king and queen.  I love the heart detail with the flowers plus something about the pair when often used together seems lucky.
I also love the garden of love sheets.  Filled with bright colors and hearts, these ones are so festive!  They're perfect for a shower, the response card envelop or even a thank you post shower or wedding.  Speaking of festive, how great is the celebrate in the neon lights?  It's the perfect stamp for a rehearsal dinner invitation, bachelor or bachelorette or even an engagement party!
Be sure to visit the USPS Shop to purchase these LOVE-ly designs.  What do you envision on your envelopes?  Isn't something wedding themed, a photo, something sentimental?  If you're already hitched, what did you opt to do?  So curious, let us know!                                                                                                                                                                                            Happy Stamping!

Words of Wisdom Wednesdays: We're Engaged... Now What?

As some of you may already know, over the holidays just before my birthday actually, I got engaged! Now it's very rare I get personal on our blog but... it can be such an exciting yet overwhelming process and since I recently experienced so much of the advice I often give to my clients, I thought it was fitting to give all our newly engaged brides-to-be a little review on the first and most important initial steps.

Immediately after you say yes, there will most likely be a handful of very special people you will want to call and share your amazing news with. Some of you may have a smaller amount of family and friends to call and some of you may have a larger number you may have to reach. If your list is on the longer side, one thing you may want to consider is save some for the next day or split up the calls where your making them together but your groom-to-be is calling his men, while your calling your ladies. It's such an exciting moment and this ease the process as after making all those calls you will be exhausted. Make sure to take lots of deep breaths as they really do help, I swear.

One thing to note, people are sensitive, all will be very VERY excited for you. Take the time to make the calls and let your family and friends know first.

Before you start announcing it publicly on the web like on Facebook or Twitter those closest to you will want to scream, shout and celebrate with you. Several brides in the past and even friends have shared hurt feelings over finding out via Internet versus that extra personal step. It may take an extra ten or thirty minutes and trust me, we know how excited you are and just want to get it out... But, making that handful of people feel extra special as they each receive your call or even text so they can share your moment with you is so worth it, we promise.

After all the calls and announcements are made take a few more deep breaths, get a good night sleep and be prepared to wake up even more excited the next morning. I assure you, the excitement does not go away nor dwindle. The best piece of advice I can give you is enjoy every second, every moment, every congratulations and each time you flash your ring. This will never get old but it does go by very quickly.

Once you are ready to start the planning there are several initial things to discuss and figure out. First being your date. Now, most don't set the date until they decide on their venue to be sure it's available, however others have a specific date or month they must have and everything else centers around that. For this discussion, if you can decide on the year and ideally a season, this will be enough to get you started. It also helps when you get bombarded with the questions, which trust me you will... When are you getting married? Have you set a date? Do you know when? etc... By at least setting your year and/or season, you can gracefully respond, "We are thinking next fall" or "We are hoping for Summer of 2011".

Next, discuss your budget. This may be a conversation to have with parents on both the bride and groom side, family and even each other. Figure out your numbers or at least a range with where you would like to be. It's quite a challenge to discuss number of guests, location or so much else without knowing what is possible. The hardest part of the process can often be falling for something not within reach. You can avoid this if you know where your budget needs to be from the get go.

After budget comes your guest count. This can be very overwhelming if you have a large family and a large group of friends. Discuss if you want a larger wedding or something smaller and more intimate. Deciding on your ideal size prior to actually creating your list, will better prepare you for cuts if necessary, as you actually assemble it. Make your ideal list together and be sure to merge the lists from both your families. After doing so look at your final number, how do you feel? If it's too large it's time for your first cut. You may want to make several to get to where your numbers need to be. Some advice for making cuts, don't think about whose feelings you will hurt, think about if you'll be hurt if that person is not in attendance.

Once your date, budget and guest count have all been discussed you are officially ready to really start your planning process. Decide whether you would like to hire a professional to assist you during your planning. While we recommend working with a professional ( ahem Sterling Engagements), we understand that each bride has their own preferences and ultimately are still here to support you.

We highly suggest contracting a planner for at least the final month of your wedding, as we believe that every bride should be able to enjoy the month leading up to her wedding stress free. Whether you are interested in a full-service option, partial or something for the final month, if you do decide to hire someone it's best to do it sooner than later. Even with contracting services for Month-Of Wedding Management only, you still can benefit from vendor referrals and host of other details that should you contract later you many not receive. So once you do decide what you are interested in, start exploring your options and you may get more out of even the smallest of service options.

There is so much more we can go into from here from the venue to vendors to the dress and our favorite... Shoes! But we'll save the rest for future posts, conversations and of course when we hopefully get to work with you, personalizing everything to you and your special day.

Words of Wisdom Wednesday: The Importance of Videography

Cinematography happens to be one of our favorite elements from a wedding. While a picture is worth a thousand words, there is nothing more powerful or emotionally riveting than the story a wedding day video tells. There is something truly magical about reliving the most special of moments, being able to hear vows and speeches all over again and simply just viewing the day, after it happens. Your wedding day goes by so quickly and so much is happening at once that many often overlook things large or small. Having the peace of mind in knowing you will have a keepsake to hold onto and experience everything all over again is priceless.

Unfortunately, video tends to be one of the first vendors our clients seem to want to omit, for budget purposes or they just don't think they need it. We always encourage them to reevaluate this decision based on prior experiences with past clients. For quite some time clients have chosen to go without a video and to this day it tends to be one of their number one regrets. We now suggest at the very minimum having someone document the raw footage from the day. In the past several years, clients have taken our advice, hired a videographer for the day and have been beyond pleased in their decision.

One thing to note, their is a substantial difference between a wedding video and a cinematography styled wedding film. One of our favorite companies, Charles Lauren Films, recently spoke on some of the major differences between the two styles and why your video really is an investment for your future. In the video below, Kelsey Pluskat explains how the post-production process is truly what separates a cinema film from what she calls "your mother's wedding video".

Another incredible element to add to your wedding video is a highlight reel or even better yet the signature "same-day" edit created especially by Mr. Daniel Boswell of Imagique Cinema. Both the highlight reel and the "same-day" edit capture the most memorable moments of your day and feature them in an edited version synced to music. Sometimes they can also take words from speeches or vows or just special things said and edit those in as well.

The primary difference between the highlight reel and the "same-day" edit is the date it's shown. A "same-day" edit is created and shown live on-site at your wedding! Yes, this is actually possible and truly amazing. Guests are shocked and ecstatic to see all the details behind the scenes they didn't get to see during the day like getting ready moments or the minutes leading up to the ceremony. Typically we like to schedule the "same-day" edit for immediately following the cutting of the cake. This usually gives pros like Daniel ample time to setup an edit station in private and really go above and beyond with the cutting and mixing to your preselected song.

Here is an example of one of those magical "same-day" edits by Imagique Cinemafrom our Platinum Wedding. This happens to be one of our most favorite of all time! Not only do we love Alicia Keys but we also adore Kristel and Jason!

If you have additional questions in regards to Wedding Videography and the difference between Cinematography, please don't hesitate to ask.

If you are in search for a stellar videography team here are three of our personal favorites.

Daniel Boswell

David and Kelsey Pluskat

Jason Garner Young of Garner Films

These companies are the best of the best and working with any of them will present you with an amazing video!

Happy Viewing!

Words of Wisdom Wednesdays: Bank on what you consider to be your Cons

Have you ever heard the quote "One man's trash is another man's treasure"? This can even be true with weddings and events more than many often realize. Today's wisdom is all about going beyond the ordinary and pushing things to a point that turns what you many consider to be a negative into a positive.

We are often approached with clients that fall in love with their venue or even dress and other things, but still find reasons to feel insecure with what we like to call "kiwi's". A kiwi is brown and fuzzy on its exterior, which we admit is not the prettiest of fruits... but once cut open, it's not to bad on the eyes right? The beautiful green color, the seeds, the lighter center, it's textured and they even taste good!

Point were trying to make, is sometimes look beyond what you think is a problem or you have an issue with and simply embrace it. Sometimes the biggest elephants in the room can just be given a little TLC or even turned around and they will transition into something you just love!

Try thinking about something that has maybe bothered you and see if you can put it into prospective. Having a hard time, comment and give me your scenario... I'll respond with some ideas.

Happy Contemplation!
